The SARIS Summer Check: 4 Things to Check Before You Go
Whether you’re towing a compact box trailer or a heavy-duty machine transporter – it’s important to prepare properly for any long-distance trip. Here are our four essential tips for a safe holiday with your trailer:
1. Make sure your car is up to the task
Holidays often mean a fully packed car – passengers, luggage, and now also a trailer. Check if your car can safely tow the weight of your trailer and cargo. You’ll find towing limits in your car’s manual or registration documents.
2. Inspect your trailer’s tyres
Tyres are critical for safety. Check the tread depth, watch for cracks or dryness, and ensure the tyre pressure is correct. Not sure if the tyres are roadworthy? Ask your local SARIS dealer to inspect them.
3. Check the coupling and secure the load
Make sure the coupling and breakaway cable are properly connected. The nose weight should be within the recommended range, and your load should be evenly distributed. To avoid cargo shifting or falling out, use a cargo net, cover, or enclosed trailer to keep everything secure.
4. Test your trailer lights
Don’t just check if the lights are on – make sure they’re functioning correctly. Inspect all bulbs, wiring, and connections. Your brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and fog lights should all respond at the right time.
