The SARIS Trailer

Safety Checklist

At SARIS, safety has always been our top priority. Every SARIS trailer meets strict European standards and undergoes a full inspection before it leaves our factory. But safety doesn’t stop there – safe trailer use also depends on how well you prepare and maintain your trailer.

With this simple checklist, you’ll make sure your trailer is ready for every journey, especially when carrying heavy loads or driving long distances.

Check Before You Tow: The SARIS Safety Checklist

Before setting off with your SARIS trailer, it’s essential to carry out a few basic safety checks. It only takes a few minutes and can help you avoid major issues on the road.

Here are the key things to look out for:

1. Tyres: Grip, Safety, and Fuel Efficiency

Your trailer tyres are one of the most important components. Worn or damaged tyres can lead to dangerous situations and unnecessary wear on your trailer.

  • Check the tyre tread depth – it should be at least 1.6 mm, measured across the full width of the tyre, including the sides.
  • Look for cracks or dry rot. If you see the internal cord layer when pressing the tyre, it’s time to replace it.
  • Make sure the tyre pressure is correct – especially before long journeys. Proper pressure improves grip, reduces wear, and helps fuel efficiency. You’ll find the max pressure on the side of the tyre.

Not sure? Your local SARIS dealer can help you inspect and replace trailer tyres safely.

2. Hitching: Securely Connected to Your Vehicle

The second part of the checklist focuses on the connection between trailer and tow vehicle. A poor connection can cause the trailer to detach – something no one wants.

  • Check your tow ball for wear. The standard diameter is 50 mm and may not deviate more than 1 mm. A worn ball creates play, which can lead to disconnection.
  • Measure the height of the tow ball (on an unloaded vehicle). The distance from the centre of the ball to the ground should be between 38–45 cm.
  • Inspect the trailer hitch. If it’s bent, cracked, or fails to close automatically, it’s no longer safe and should be replaced.
  • Grease the hitch regularly to reduce friction and prevent premature wear.
  • Check the breakaway cable or safety coupling. This cable ensures that if the trailer disconnects, it won’t cause serious damage. Look for fraying or corrosion.
  • Make sure the electrical plug is clean, undamaged, and fits properly. Corrosion or dirt can affect visibility and brake light signals.

3. Visibility: Be Seen, Stay Safe

Good visibility is essential – for you and everyone else on the road. Make sure your trailer is visible in all conditions.

  • Test all lights and indicators, including brake lights, fog lights, and reverse lights.
  • Check that all reflectors are clean and undamaged – they help keep your trailer visible even when the lights are off.
  • Ensure the number plate is clearly visible and correctly positioned on the trailer.
