A jump in the deep end

‘The day I stepped into the office of SARIS I will never forget. Started on 20 August 1990, the day after the summer holidays. I was put behind my desk and given all the operating instructions of all the equipment and I had to learn it myself. I was put behind the telephone system. I was deluged with calls, it was really a jump in the deep end. I didn’t know whether I would enjoy this so much. A few days later, I was inducted by a colleague. My first day was terrible.’ Apparently, that jump in the deep end was a good start to a long-term career at SARIS for Marjolein after all.

‘I am always proud when I come across a SARIS on the road.’

Ambience over time

‘What attracts me so much about SARIS? The family business feeling. Cosy atmosphere. You see a lot of young people joining. There is little staff turnover, so those young people all stay here too. Many stay on after graduating. That says a lot anyway.’ Over the years, people come and go, but Marjolein is still a familiar face at SARIS. ‘People from the older generation have left. We have a good time together, both here in the office and in production. I also enjoy sharing interests with my colleagues. At peaks very hard work, but also the fun together.’

Highlights in 34 years

For Marjolein, it is important that the atmosphere within the company is good. The feeling that you can count on each other is also a nice feeling, not only for Marjolein herself, but also for the rest of the colleagues. ‘Milestone was 250,000th trailer, which was a highlight. This was in 1995. Feeling: proud to have achieved this together. I am always proud when I come across a SARIS on the road. For years we went to Terschelling in autumn. When you arrived by boat then there would be a SARIS Flamingo trailer, I always loved that. You see SARIS everywhere, even when you travel to Germany, for example.’

Here to stay

‘I am not a job hopper. I started here fresh from school. I had studied tourism. My sister saw a vacancy, nice to start with. Then I could look further from there, but I stuck around here. The connection with colleagues among themselves was just so much fun, and I don’t leave that easily. I bond quickly.’
Besides the colleagues, Marjolein is also pleased with the culture at SARIS. ‘Taking nice time off once in a while, even if it’s unexpected. We have it super good here. We have quite a form of freedom here. If you finish everything within your working hours, then it’s fine. I do experience stress sometimes, though, for example with the introduction of a new system.’ Marjolein is a pleasant colleague who always thinks of others. ‘If I can help people move then I will not fail to do so.’

The SARIS feeling

‘What I expect from the future? I hope SARIS remains the fun and pleasant company it is today! And that we remain the same fun club we are now. In 34 years, I’ve always worked super-pleasantly. SARIS feels like a warm blanket. Great atmosphere.’
