Thousands of syrup waffles baked in our SARIS trailer

We all know that our trailers are multifunctional. But the fact that syrup waffles are also baked in it is a nice surprise! Curious as we are, we sought out entrepreneurs Ron and Yvonne from Chevinique for their story.

The search

Ron: “I had been working at a bank for many years. In 2015, I was involved in a reorganization that put my job at risk. Then you start thinking… What can I actually do? And above all: what else do I enjoy doing? After a short search I found it quite quickly. Making syrup waffles! The smell, the atmosphere at markets, fairs, parties and schools, the people you make happy and the places you visit… It seemed great to me.”

From motorcycles to syrup waffles

“No sooner said than done. I started looking for a second-hand trailer. I quickly found this one! Funny detail: this SARIS trailer had previously been used to transport motorcycles. However, the previous owner wanted to get rid of the trailer and made a bar in it to make it easier to sell. Perfect for my purpose! The purchase was a piece of cake and after installing electricity and installing a kitchenette and refrigerator, I was able to hit the road. Of course, I first took a course in baking syrup waffles with the traditional specialist Markus & Markus in Waddinxveen. Nationally known as the tastiest stroopwafel baker in the Netherlands.”

On the road at the weekend

“I kept my job, four days a week. During the weekend I created time to go out with the trailer to bake delicious syrup waffles.” Yvonne – who is responsible for marketing and communication – adds: “Of course we also had to come up with a name and develop a corporate identity. Our creative daughter did that. The name Chevinique is a combination of the last syllables of our children’s names. Sounds pretty chic, don’t you think? We recently made a nice sign on the bottom of the trailer. This way we make it a little more professional every time!”

Always stored indoors

Ron: “All my expectations have come true. It’s great fun to do and thanks to the trailer we have everything compactly at hand. We go to places we would otherwise never go. Think of the Messe in Cologne, the Flachsmarkt in Germany and the Chassétheater in Breda. The syrup waffle is a traditional product. The smell that is given off during baking has enormous appeal, making it often an impulse purchase. For the elderly, the wonderful smell is often a childhood memory. Baking syrup waffles is a real hobby. But a hobby that makes money. The combination of an office job and hitting the road with the trailer is also great. The trailer has always been stored indoors, even with the first owner. I take great care of it!”

The trailer can withstand a knock

“Last year during the market in Hapert, someone crashed into the sales hatch of our trailer. We were shocked and were afraid that the entire construction had been disrupted. But guess what? Not a scratch. The trailer had only moved slightly. Now that’s what I call quality! We take the trailer out about 20 times a year, mainly in the summer months and during the Christmas period. We have now baked thousands of syrup waffles. And we hope that we can use this solid trailer from SARIS for a long time to come!”
